NYT reports today that the Ratcliffe visit to Moscow was at least in part to give the Russians a reality check about how we perceive their situation vs Ukraine and to urge them to come to a negotiated solution - on the basis that Putin's FSB/SVR may not have been giving him the true picture on the ground and maybe this meeting will spur them to be more open with him (or spur Putin to ask his guys to tell him the true story). High hopes! Delusional despots don't dream of failures.
One problem with the NYT reporting is that Ratcliffe supposedly didn't meet with Putin. He met with his FSB counterpart. That would be one of the guys giving Putin a false sense of progress in the first place. So it's not likely he would hear Ratcliffe out and suddenly go tell Putin there are problems. Seems fishy. Real reason for the visit could be none of the above, we just don't know.
True! It relies on Putin's suspicions being sufficiently aroused by our DCI's unusual visit that he calls his senior team on the carpet and makes them spill their guts.
