Is any president really responsible for the economy in his/her first year of office? It seems to me that it is more or less what they inherited. Though these tariffs do seem to be having some impact.
It's a great question and I'd say yes you are right, first year of a term is generally whatever the president inherited. The catch, however, is that voters hold the current president responsible after only a few months, as we're seeing with Trump. I say all the time that the US president doesn't control the economy nearly as much as everybody thinks--but he gets the credit or blame no matter what. At any rate, this was the inaugural issue of my Trump ranking and it will become more meaningful as time goes on. ~ RN
