I agree that unlimited campaign donations have corrupted our politics. However, it should be noted that it is primarily Democrats who have fought to limit those donations, and it is Republicans who over the decades have removed the reins on the donations. From Lewis Powell through Citizens United, it has been Republicans/conservatives who have prevailed in allowing this corruption to happen. Democrats have felt that they can not unilaterally disarm in the money arms race, and have therefore participated in it. However, it's in the party's DNA to try to limit donations. There is even an effort by Senate Democrats to get a constitutional amendment passed across the country to limit campaign donations.
There is a difference between the two parties on this matter, and that should not be ignored.
Agree. I try not to wade too deep into the politics of politics (because so many others do) but I think you characterize this correctly. My gripe with Democrats isn't that they're corrupt as much as they're just effete.
Maybe there's the well off Dems who might be viewed as effete, but I just see the party as weak. Half of it is corrupted by money, and I would say that's the centrist part, and so as a whole they don't ask for much. We need real change in our country, and the party must be bold enough to lead for it.
I used to be a Republican but, not anymore and never will never be one again. I am now a bonafided independent. Trump took care of that.I have to try to keep my promise on stopping my comment's on Trump but, here is one more.
You have hit the core of how I have felt for many years. If you have ever attended a local political party meeting you will have seen that those with the most extreme political views tend to dominate discussions and decisions. Those with more centrist views are cast aside as irrelevant. There’s no wonder that the major parties have alienated those of us in the middle. But in a closely divided congress, I do believe that enough well placed Independent victories could sway the balance of power and force more responsible legislation. As for the Presidency, you are correct and Constitutional changes would be needed.
