I agree with you. I will vote though for my people to be elected. I want step aside an not do my duty for my country. I have to say this are i would be remiss and, so i will. This so called country that M.D. Manion lives end was built by immigrants and people who are looking for a better life and shoveling them off to foreign country's will not help our economy.Yes it want be a Democrat or a Republican but i will vote. One other thing i still like due process.

Ask me, I like being an Independent. I can choose the D or R policies I support. All I want is open primaries so I can vote for one or the other in each primary election!

Open primaries would be a great start. If we ever have real choice of a third party in this country…

This piece is spot on. I’m a lifelong active Democrat who just re-registered as an Independent. Everyone has their reasons, but it’s clear to me that both parties have lost the moderate voter. I suspect the DSA will eat the Democrats the same way the Tea Party/Trumpists have devoured the GOP. Thanks Rick.

Independents need to press for open primaries, IMO. The only real downside to being an I is you don't get a vote in the primaries in many places. That means the least extreme and most pragmatic voters don't have a say in who the candidates will be in the general election, one reason we keep ending up with bad choices on both sides. Open primaries won't solve every problem but they will give the BIGGEST VOTING BLOC the input it deserves.

Why do authors say voters want more from their parties. I want common sense and economic prosperity from my parties. That why I support Republicans on the economy, a border closed to rapists, murderers, pedophiles, carjackers, shoplifters and deporting illegal alien criminal immigrants and drill baby drill. I vote with Democrats on laws promoting access to birth control and access to abortions. Why wouldn’t I want my tax dollars to pay hundreds of dollars for an abortion rather than spend hundreds of thousands of dollars raising a fatherless, crime prone, drug prone, shoplifting prone, young person whose role models are street gang members instead of fathers. Is this really a question for intelligent voters? Stop the anti abortion virtue signaling Extremism. If people are against abortions for penniless single mothers they can start GoFundMe sites and support higher taxes to support these fatherless children. Most families struggle to pay bills for their own children. Why would they vote for higher taxes to support illegitimate and illegal babies when they can’t afford to raise their own children? Why? W. Well you need two parties to get the platforms you support. But only one vote! The way I'd frame the question is why isn't there a middle party that simply stands for common sense?

William ManionMDPhDJDMBA's avatar

Who are you? We are Democrats and extremist Republicans!!! What common sense? Doesn’t that imply intelligence and normal IQ? W. Manion, MDPhDJDMBA

Middle parties have been tried for hundreds of years without success. Democrats and RINO REPUBLICANS are too entrenched in their jobs to support Trump and Real Republicans. Trump and his followers are really the closest thing to independent successful third parties we have ever seen. The old Republican Party is Mike Pence, Mitt Romney, Mitch McConnell and many old fart deep state Republicans who will be voted out. W. Manion, MDPhDJDMBA

Many European govts have multiparty parliamentary systems. We're not going to change our whole system of government, so that's not feasible here. What I'd like to see is open primaries allowing INDs to vote for either a R or a D candidate. Let the sensible middle vote for one of the other. We'd probably get better candidates in the general election and who knows maybe better governance.
